There are programs, policies, and practices, yet few behavioral healthcare providers know how to use it in the therapy room. This presentation will give an overview of harm reduction psychotherapy, explore why it is a controversial topic, and review its core concepts with special attention on alcohol—the #1 substance of use. Participants will walk away with tangible tools to engage clients in any stage of change and experience a paradigm shift in how we treat people with drug and alcohol problems. Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the program, attendees will be able to:
- Describe harm reduction psychotherapy’s core concepts and why it is a controversial topic
- Define the differences between harm reduction and moderation
- Prepare a harm reduction protocol for group and individual clients in any Stage of Change
- Develop and monitor an Ideal Use Plan
